About the Faculty of Health

York’s Faculty of Health believes the key to the crisis in health care is to keep more people healthier, longer. Our emphasis is prevention first, then care when needed – to make a difference in people’s lives and make health and health care sustainable for all. Our vision is to educate future global leaders in redefining and advancing health and human science.

Our diverse campus and community act as a living laboratory that provides students and researchers real-world situations in which to learn, work, and apply their skills. The classroom experience takes on a whole new meaning as students move from lab to clinic to athletic fields to the community to broaden their experience and expertise.

I am proud to be the inaugural Dean of the Faculty of Health, which was founded in 2006 by integrating four academic units with varying perspectives. No university in Canada combines these strengths in equivalent depth.

Message from the Dean

Towards Prevention and Health Promotion

Our goal is to design and test ways to dramatically improve our capacity to keep more people and their communities healthier, longer. Healthier populations ease the load on health systems, allowing resources to be redirected to those who need it most.

To reach our goal we know that we must go beyond traditional boundaries in health care, medicine and public health. We must work together to create a total health system – emphasizing the social determinants of health, prevention and health promotion as well as treatment. I invite you to join us in this regard.

Our commitment to community

In addition to our local commitment, we serve the student population through our association with Stong and Calumet colleges and go far beyond to be a world citizen, establishing ties in regions such as India, the Middle East, China, South America and Africa.

Closer to home and as part of York Region, we believe the Faculty of Health has a distinct advantage in being closely allied to this growing community. With about 46% of the region compromised of immigrants, it is a real example of global diversity. Read about “York in York Region”: A Strategic Advantage
